Sister Katherine Mattern was born on December 8, 1934. She is now 71 years old. She has 2 sisters and 2 brothers. Her father's name is Peter J. Mattern and he was born on July 19, 1902. He was born in Emmons, North Dakota. He lived his life as a farmer and his highest level of education was 4th grade. Sister Katherine Mattern's mother's name is Elizabeth Mattern-Schumacher and she was born on May 24, 1906 in Emmons, North Dakota. She lived her life as a homemaker and her highest level of education was 6th grade. Sister Katherine Mattern was also born in North Dakota with her 2 sisters and 2 brothers. The family lived on a farm and everyone was responsible for their own part.

The family moved to Minnesota when Katherine was entering high school between 1949 and 1950. Many girls (and boys) in farm communities didn't attend high school, but Katherines family valued education highly. After high school, Katherines father encouraged her to go on to college. She did end up going to college and received a BA in education. Sister Katherine also achieved her long awaited goal of becoming a sister, although in the beginning she yearned to become a priest. When she finally learned that only boys could be priests, she thought it was okay to become a sister instead. She now is part of the School of Sisters of Notre Dame in Good Council, where she has stayed a nun for 50 years. At the convent, Sister Katherines days mostly consist of teaching, which she enjoys very much.

Growing up on the farm there was a lot of work to do but there was also time to have fun. Sister Katherine and her siblings would invent their own original games according to the seasons. In the winter they would sled. During the winter, snow would fall very heavily and would cover the top of the haystacks and barn. Sledding in the winter was one of Sister Katherines favorite games. The kids would also create various other games for the other different seasons. Sister Katherine enjoyed games with her family the most. Sister Katherine was also very shy as a child. She was dedicated to her school work and her family. Overall, Sister Katherines life is full of great accomplishments and has made a big impact on the others that surround her.
