Marguerite's Pictures

Marguerite Monteiro was born on November 24, 1951, in St. Paul, Minnesota. She is the third oldest of seven children born to Manvel and Madeline Monteiro.

When Marguerite was in kindergarten, her family moved Bogotá, Colombia as a part of a work exchange program that employed her Portuguese father. After this period of time, her family moved back to the United States. However, when she was in fifth grade, her family decided to move back to South America permanently. This experience began in Colombia, where Marguerite was exposed to the culture in many ways, especially through interaction with hired help in her home.

From Colombia, Marguerite moved to São Paulo, Brazil, and attended an American high school there. In Brazil, Marguerite once again gained wonderful cultural experience. Her parents encouraged her to experience as much of the culture as possible, and she spent most of her time outside school with Brazilian friends. Marguerite said the biggest culture shock she had through her whole experience was in the eighth grade, when she came back the United States for a brief period of time while her father was on an extended leave from his job. While in the States, she attended Marshall Junior High School in St. Paul, Minnesota. After this extended leave, Marguerite moved back to São Paulo and eventually to Campinas, Brazil, where she finished high school.

Eventually, Marguerite moved back to the United States and attended Hamline University. It was here at Hamline University that she met her husband Bill. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in French. However, she felt she did not prepare herself for good employment. Family was of utmost importance to Marguerite, and thus she has often taken jobs that have kept her underemployed to play a more active role in her family. Marguerite feels that her experience abroad separates her from most Americans, and she is extremely grateful for the opportunities she was able to have.
