Mavis’s Group Reflections

During the interview with Mavis Yess, it was interesting to hear how she grew up with out running water, electricity, and new clothes. While listening to her story we realized how different our lives were in comparison to hers, and how much we take for granted. Even with all of the differences there are between Mavis and our group, we could see that we all had to go through the same things as she did during our coming of age. It was also amusing to hear her make her hardships seem funny. For instance, off camera she talked about Ralph picking her up for a date and that she had to sit on a grain bag in the car because there was no seat. She also told of having to raise a calf to get money to buy a bicycle.

In the beginning this project seemed very challenging, but now looking back we had lots of good times. This project helped us grow as women, and individuals, by learning from other women’s pasts, and using that knowledge to benefit our lives. It was also adventurous to get to know each other, all having come from different backgrounds and lifestyles. We learned to work together and make compromises when we hit bumps in the road. Overall we learned a lot from this project, and hopefully we can all stay friends throughout our college careers.
