Abe Abram was born April 27, 1941, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Guy Emmett and Elizabeth Marie Abram. She was the second born child and oldest girl of six children. Abe had a nice childhood growing up in Robbinsdale, Minnesota, a suburb of Minneapolis. Abe loved both of her parents, and said that throughout her childhood her mother was the driving force for change in the family. Her mother had a great love for helping people in the community. This love for people influenced Abe, and Abe still says that one of her hobbies is people.

A self-proclaimed tomboy, Abe loved to run around and play with the neighbor kids. Abe attended private Catholic schools from elementary through high school. She enjoyed attending private schools, where her favorite class was music; however she enjoyed tap dancing, climbing trees, and roller skating as well. Rather than attending a public high school, Abe opted to take an entrance exam to attend St Margarets Academy, which was only open to young women. At St. Margarets Academy, Abe played half court intramural basketball. Abe also liked socializing with the many friends she made in school.

After Abes 8th grade graduation, she took a train to Chicago to visit her aunt. Abe got her hair cut and received a fancy dress. It was at this time when she felt she had crossed over from being a child to being an adult.

Abe met her future husband, Dean, through a neighborhood friend, and dated him throughout high school. She and Dean married August 1959, after her graduation. Abe stated that it was common for young women to get married right out of high school because future plans, other than marriage or becoming a nun, were rarely discussed.
