Map of Ruth Home Town

Ruth Louise Otto was born on July 10, 1919, to Arthur Roberts and Etta Sheldon Eakin. They lived in Mankato, where Arthur was a farmer and Etta was a nurse. She had two younger siblings, a brother Dean and a sister Ann. She said that she was very close to her brother and they did many things together. She was very active in high school as well as college, where she played violin in the orchestra. She was also in choir and active in the theatre, performing in various plays. She attended a country school for her younger years, then attended the small high school that was in town.

Ruth lived a very happy life but definitely had to put in her share of work just to make it through. She would help out on the farm almost every day either working in the fields or milking the cows. She would also help her mother as much as she could inside the house. They would eat a lot of their own food they would grow on the farm along with the animals they had. For fun they would play around the farm and with neighbor kids when they would have neighborhood parties. She was always encouraged to continue her education after high school, encouragement which inspired her to go onto college.
