Honor Band 2014

Wind Band Rehearsal

We are thrilled to invite you to nominate your students for the Minnesota State University, Mankato High School Honor Band to be held Friday, January 17, 2014 on the campus of Minnesota State, Mankato. The ensemble is open to all deserving students in the 10th - 12th grades. The day will include tours of the building, performances by Minnesota State, Mankato instrumental ensembles, rehearsals with the wind band faculty and clinics with the applied faculty.


The High School Honor Band will include approximately 80 musicians and will be conducted by Dr. Amy Roisum-Foley, Director of Bands and Mr. Michael C. Thursby, Director of Athletic Bands.

Amy K. Roisum Foley is currently in her 12th year as the Director of Bands and Professor of Music at Minnesota State University, Mankato where she administrates and conducts the concert bands and chamber ensembles. Her teaching also includes graduate and undergraduate conducting and instrumental music education. Roisum Foley has served as guest conductor and clinician for honor bands and festivals in the US and Canada.

Roisum Foley received her Bachalor of Music in Music Education and Performance from St. Olaf College, her Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of St. Thomas Aquinas and her Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education and Wind Band Conducting from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Her additional studies include courses in Postural Restoration; coursework in Body Mapping; private lessons and extensive research in body health and alignment for musicians; study and lessons in performance dynamics with composer Michael Colgrass and research and application of Dalcroze Eurhythmics for Conductors. In addition, Roisum Foley apprenticed with master craftsmen, Charles B. Olson, Chris Blount and Dave Foley and is building batons for Custom Batons, Inc.

Michael C. Thursby is the Director of Athletic Bands at the Minnesota State University, Mankato where he teaches courses in percussion, assists with the MSU Instrumental ensembles, and is Director of the Maverick Athletic Bands. Thursby's musical training includes a Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance and Music Education from at the University of Iowa and a Master of Music degree from University of Northern Iowa.

From 2010-2013, Thursby taught in the public schools of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, where he directed the marching programs, conducted concert ensembles, led the percussion program, and taught a variety of other music courses. In the realm of marching arts, Professor Thursby has worked as a percussion instructor, arranger, and clinician throughout the Midwest, directing the percussion sections for the University of Iowa "Hawkeye Marching Band," and the UNI "Panther Marching Band." He also spent time marching in Drum Corps International with the Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps and the Emerald Knights Drum and Bugle Corps.

Thursby has served as an adjudicator for the Minnesota Percussion Association and in several other circuits throughout the Midwest. He endorses and performs with Mapex and Majestic Percussion equipment, Pro-Mark sticks and mallets, Evans drumheads, and OffWorld percussion drumpads. Top

Student Nominations

Enclosed you will find a band nomination form for up to six students. Please rank your students based upon your own criteria. Make sure you list each student's full name and their specific instrument, i.e., Alto Saxophone, Bass Clarinet, Treble Clef Baritone, and areas of strength for your percussionists. We will send out one copy of each selection of music for each student approximately six weeks prior to the event. Every school that sends a nomination form will be represented on stage. Top

Inclement Weather

Make sure your students clear the entire day for rehearsals and performance. If a conflict should develop, notify me immediately so that I might contact an alternate nominee. If there is inclement weather on the day of the event, all ensemble directors will be notified by 6:00 am via cell phone and email. The cost of registration is $25 per student for the honor band. Students will receive the musical services of the conductors, lunch on campus, a reception following the concert, and a certificate. The concert is free of charge. Top

Registration Deadlines

Please note that the deadline for Honor Band nominations is November 1st. You can mail or email your nominations. You will receive an email notification upon receipt of your nomination form and the parts will be mailed out on December 1, 2012. If you have not received confirmation by mid-November, please contact us. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call me or send me an email message. Teacher Workshops

Minnesota State University, Mankato music faculty will be providing mini-sessions that will count toward continuing education clock hours. Each teacher who takes part in these workshops will receive a certificate for your time. These workshops will be provided free-of-charge. Top
