Professor of Music Industry Studies
Tonya Butler, J.D., LL.M. is an educator, professional speaker, author, and entertainment industry advocate. She was recently a Professor of Entertainment Business at the famed Los Angeles Film School in Hollywood, CA; an Associate Professor of Music Business in the Recording Industry Department at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) and a form Coordinator of the Music Business Program at the University of Memphis. She holds a Juris Doctorate from California Western School of Law and a Master of Laws in Entertainment and Media from Southwestern University School of Law and Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, England.
As a former Music Attorney and Record Label Executive Butler's work experience is comprehensive. Her numerous legal and business affairs credits include compilation album, film, and sound licensing for Rhino Records, contract work for MGM films and telivision shows, marketing and promotion on a variety of Pioneer Entertainment albums projects and legal representation for several major and independent entertainment companies.
Professor Butler has served on the Memphas Shelby County film and Television Commission, the Memphis Rock 'N Soul Museum Board of Directors and the Music and Entertainment Industry Educators Associations (MEIEA) Executive Board. She is a voting member and former two-term Governor of Memphis Chapter of the Recording Academy and is Chair Emeritus of the Memphis and Shelby County Music Commission.
