Minnesota State University, Mankato's Campus Kitchens program has been awarded $5,000 from the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation.

The student-run program at Minnesota State Mankato was given the award Oct. 10 at an awards luncheon in Owatonna.

The award follows national recognition by the National Campus Kitchens Project, which gave Minnesota State Mankato's program the Excellence in Programming award Oct. 7 in Washington D.C. The Minnesota State Mankato program was one of two in the nation recognized by the National Campus Kitchens Project.

Karen Borchert, National Director of the Campus Kitchens Project, praised the widespread involvement by students, academic departments and community members in the Minnesota State Mankato program.

"Mankato is leading our national network in the development of dynamic, community-specific programming for Campus Kitchen volunteers," Borchert said.

The Campus Kitchen uses leftover food from Minnesota State Mankato residence halls to serve more than 300 meals per week to families and adults in need. The entire project is led by college students.
