Southern Minnesota Genealogy Expo will be Nov. 1 at Minnesota State University, Mankato

2008-10-22

Mankato, Minn. – The eighth annual South Central Minnesota Genealogy Expo, open to anyone interested in researching family history, will be Saturday, Nov. 1, at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

The event, co-organized by the Minnesota State Mankato Memorial Library and the Blue Earth County Historical Society, will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Centennial Student Union.

“Researching family history can be a form of detective work,” says Daardi Sizemore, archives and special collections librarian at Minnesota State Mankato. “Historical ‘clues’ lead researchers to different resources and repositories.

“The South Central Minnesota Genealogy Expo offers new and veteran family historians the opportunity to learn about the resources available at area research facilities and learn about new tips and tricks for successful genealogy research,” Sizemore added.

Speech Communication faculty member Dave Engen will discuss “Preserving Voices” at the opening session, explaining the “Voices from the Valley” project – an audio documentary Web site featuring people and stories of Southern Minnesota. Engen will talk about the project’s origins, play some audio pieces, and explore how other researchers can use audio documentary.

Early bird expo registration fee is $20 by Oct. 24.  Registration after Oct. 24 is $25. A box lunch is available to participants.
