April 06: Great Depressions Lessons

‘Great Depression Lessons’ that Could Help Today’s Economy to be Discussed at Minnesota State University, Mankato April 6

2009-03-19

Mankato, Minn. – “Lessons from the Great Depression: The Fed and Financial Crisis” will be discussed by Minnesota State Mankato Economics professor Richard C. Schiming Monday, April 6.

Schiming will talk about Great Depression lessons that the Federal Reserve System can learn to minimize the impact of the current economic recession.

Schiming will present the 30th annual College of Social & Behavioral Sciences Frontier Forum Lecture. The lecture, free and open to students, faculty, staff and the public, will be at 7 p.m. in Ostrander Auditorium of the Centennial Student Union.

Twice in its history, the Federal Reserve has confronted the painful combination of a stock market collapse, a tidal wave of mortgage foreclosures and a long, deep recession. Schiming will argue that while the Fed made a number of mistakes that prolonged and deepened problems during the Great Depression of the 1930s, the system was able to restructure itself and acquire new regulatory powers.
