Ruth A. Reck to receive Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award

Global climate researcher Ruth A. Reck will receive the 2009 Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award Friday, April 24.

Reck, of Davis, Calif., is one of 12 alumni who have been named 2009 award winners. She will be honored at an April 24 dinner and ceremony hosted by the Minnesota State Mankato Alumni Association.

The Alumni Achievement Award goes to graduates who have achieved high rank or honor in their professions, and have made a major impact on their communities.

Reck, a 1954 mathematics and chemistry graduate, is a professor at University of California-Davis. She earned a Ph.D in physical chemistry from the University of Minnesota.

She is a former director of the National Institute for Global Environmental Change and of the Argonne National Laboratory’s Global Climate Change Program; was the U.S. delegate to the UN’s Scientific Council on Problems of the Environment; and has chaired or been member of more than 40 national and international boards.

She has presented seminars in Japan, China, Korea, Europe and the United Kingdom, and is the first person to introduce into a global climate model the potential effects of aerosols on the ozone layer.
