Marcy Koch of Mankato, a Professional School Counseling graduate student at Minnesota State University, Mankato, has been selected by the Minnesota School Counselors Association as the 2009 Potential School Counselor of the Year.

Koch is the fourth Minnesota State Mankato Professional School Counseling graduate student to win the award in the last six years. She was honored and received a scholarship at the Minnesota School Counselor Association’s spring conference in Brainerd May 4.

The award and scholarship are presented annually to an outstanding individual pursuing a master’s degree in school counseling. Professional school counselors and counselor educators select the winner.

“Marcy is very talented and very committed to kids,” said Rick Auger, her academic advisor and a faculty member in the School Counseling program. “She is the kind of person who builds up others rather than seeking recognition for herself. I think it is wonderful that she is being recognized by MSCA for her excellence. She is a great representative of the university and our program, and she’ll be a terrific school counselor.”

Koch will receive her master’s degree in ceremonies Saturday, May 9, at Minnesota State Mankato.

A first-grade lead teacher at Hoover Elementary School in Mankato, Koch is on sabbatical leave to complete her degree. She and her husband have served as Blue Earth County foster parents.

Minnesota State Mankato is a member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, which comprises 32 state universities, community colleges, technical colleges and combined community and technical colleges located on 54 campuses across the state.
