Dickens' classic 'A Christmas Carol' rings in holiday season

Starting Nov. 12

2009-10-21
Minnesota State University, Mankato Theatre & Dance news release [10/19/2009]

The Department of Theatre & Dance will welcome the holiday season with “A Christmas Carol,” beginning Thursday, Nov. 12

Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" illustrates the transformation of miserly Ebeneezer Scrooge, with performances Nov. 12-15, 19-22 and 28-29 in the Ted Paul Theatre. It is sponsored by Blethen, Gage and Krause, PLLP.

Adapted and directed by Department Chair Paul J. Hustoles, “A Christmas Carol” is a mystical and evocative journey of Scrooge’s self-recognition enchantingly enhanced with traditional music of the season. This production is perfect for all ages, though younger children should be prepared for the scariness of the Ghosts that lead Scrooge on his journey. Minnesota State Mankato presented this adaptation of “A Christmas Carol” in 2002.

The cast of more than 30, including nine children from the Greater Mankato area, is led by senior BFA Musical Theatre candidate Craig Daniel Stastny (The Engineer in last season’s “Miss Saigon”) as Scrooge. It features The Ghost of Jacob Marley, The Ghost of Christmas Past, The Ghost of Christmas Present and The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, as well as the Christmas-loving Fezziwigs, the entire Crachit family and 5-year-old Royal Nathaniel Habrat as Tiny Tim.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m., with Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.  There will be no evening performances Nov. 15, 22 and 29 and no matinee Nov. 28.

Tickets for “A Christmas Carol” are $14.50 regular; $13 for senior citizens, youth 16 and under and groups of 15 or more; and $10 for current Minnesota State Mankato students. The Saturday, Nov. 21, 2 p.m. matinee will be ASL interpreted (please specify when ordering). Tickets are available by calling the Theatre & Dance Box Office at 507-389-6661, by visiting the office between 4 and 6 p.m., Monday-Friday, or by visiting MSUTheatre.com.
