Students First initiative will be discussed Nov. 10

Initiative comprised of six projects, inspired by student suggestions

2009-11-03

Students First initiative information will be discussed Tuesday, Nov. 10, in Centennial Student Union.

The meeting, held from 1-2 p.m. in CSU Room 284, is open to faculty and staff.

The Students First initiative, an effort developed and stimulated by suggestions from students, addresses ways to better serve students’ educational needs. It seeks to make changes in policies, procedures and practices.

John O’Brien, Students First Director for the Office of the Chancellor, will speak at the meeting, providing information and responding to questions.

Approximately 12 percent of students enrolled at MnSCU institutions are taking courses from more than one college or university, and the number of collaborative partnerships between colleges and universities is increasing.  Students have expressed a desire to see interactivity improvements in online systems, a task the initiative seeks to execute by June 30, 2011.

The Students First initiative consists of six projects:

  • Single search project: will allow students to search for courses, programs or colleges/universities across the system
  • Single application project: will make it easier for students to complete a streamlined common application for one or more system college or university
  • Graduation planner project: will make it possible for students to access course and program requirements, create customized plans for timely graduation, share information with advisers and create “what if” scenarios to explore their options
  • Single registration project: will make it possible for students to identify and register for equivalent courses from across the system more easily
  • Single billing/ single payment project: will allow students taking courses from more than one system college or university to view and pay one bill online
  • Shared services project: will allow students to benefit from operational efficiencies and improved services—the process will focus on uniform processes, such as applying for financial aid regardless of where classes are hosted.
