Dr. Bennett was appointed to the new position of Vice President, Earth & Community Care, at Aveda Corporation in April 2007. There he is responsible for the overall direction of the company’s environmental and community outreach. Aveda is a well recognized leader in environmental sustainability through its products and operations. Dr. Bennett’s role will be to help the Aveda Team – consisting of the company and its affiliated Network of salons and retail outlets – enhance that commitment and take it to new levels of success as the business expands globally, and to extend and expand the company’s outreach to communities throughout its value chain from indigenous communities in Australia, Africa and South America to its consumers.
Prior to joining Aveda Dr. Bennett was a Senior Research Associate at The Conference Board since 2001. There he focused on sustainability and corporate citizenship issues and authored or coauthored numerous Conference Board publications, including The New Corporate Citizenship, The Road to Sustainability: Business’ First Steps, The Measure of Success: Evaluating Corporate Citizenship Performance, Expanding the Investment Frontier and A Roadmap for Strategic Energy Planning and Management . Additional publications include reports on global CEO perspectives on citizenship performance, the World Summit on Sustainable Development, and best practices in workplace health and safety management, His most recent report is Managing for a Carbon-Concerned Future: A Decision-Making Framework. Dr. Bennett also coordinated The Conference Board’s council program for executive networking among senior environment, health and safety officers.
At Nabisco from 1993 – 2001 he served as senior environmental and safety director and led the development of global environmental and safety management systems and performance tracking metrics. Between 1988 and 1993, as director of environmental affairs for Adolph Coors Company, Dr. Bennett helped to develop environmental policy for the state of Colorado through gubernatorial appointments and public-private partnerships. As a consultant, he has advised on the environmental aspects of major mining and industrial developments throughout the central and western United States. A graduate of Middlebury College, Dr. Bennett completed graduate degrees in geography at Syracuse University, taught at several colleges, and served on the faculty of the State University of New York at Geneseo.
