Under the direction of Dr. Suzannah Armentrout, students will be leaving early Monday morning to travel to the Island of St. John to participate in an ecotourism study abroad class.
While they are there, they will be meeting with owners of Cruz Bay Water Sports, Concordia Eco-tents, Maho Bay Tent Camps, and Keoka Sailing Expeditions to discuss the challenges of ecotourism, management techniques, marketing, and planning for a tourist season.
While there, students will also be volunteering their time to help put on the annual Beach-to-Beach Friends of the Virgin Islands Power Swim Race to help raise money for the Virgin Islands National Park. They will be helping organize and execute the event by helping out in beach clean up, registration, safety kayaking, check-ins, and awards ceremonies. Students will be staying in the park and participating in guided hikes within the park as well during their time abroad.
Students will have the opportunity to learn about sustainable tourism in today's "go green" initiative, all while focusing on sport and recreational opportunities within the Virgin Islands.
