MANKATO — For the first time Minnesota State University will host a Multicultural Affairs Conference, and organizers are putting the word out in hopes of attracting presenters, exhibitors and sponsors.
The event, to be held Nov. 15- 16 at MSU, is being put on by the Multicultural Affairs and Intercultural Student Center, which services African American Affairs, Asian American Pacific Islander Affairs, American Indians Affairs and Latino Affairs. The theme is “ Changing Faces in Higher Education.”
Chris Tran, director of Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs, said each department has held its own events in the past, but collaboration is a constant due to them being housed under the Multicultural Affairs and Intercultural Student Center.
Tran said the departments thought it was about time to collaborate on a public event, in part, to demonstrate the benefits of networking, connecting resources, sharing and learning from each other.
“Because of the work that we do in higher education for the under-represented populations, a lot of our work does overlap,” he said. Marisel Riquelme, administrative assistant, said they are looking for presenters of a number of possible topics and categories: access and opportunity in multiculturalism; demographics and statistics in education and achievement; achievement gap; cultural identity and/or cultural self- identity; empowerment of diverse student leadership; being an advocate for diversity and/or challenges thereof; financial aid hurdles for culturally diverse students; and projections of cultural demographic trends.
Presenters or those who exhibit may be educators, businesses, nonprofits or people of various other occupations that may tie into issues and themes of multi- culturalism. Proposal submissions are due by June 29.
