The Minnesota State University, Mankato 46th annual Highland Summer Theatre season comes to a close this week wth final shows of the Rodgers & Hammerstein classic musical, “The Sound of Music.” Performances are 7:30 p.m. July 18-21 in the Ted Paul Theatre of the Earley Center for Performing Arts.  The show opened last week to rave reviews.

Sponsored by Orthopaedic & Fracture Clinic, PA, Eide Bailly LLP and Farrish Johnson Law Office, Chtd., this is the final collaboration between Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. When a postulant proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval captain. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the captain and they marry. Upon returning from their honeymoon they discover that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, and the family must escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II. Songs include “My Favorite Things,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” and “Edelweiss.” Minnesota State Mankato presented “The Sound of Music” in 1977 and summer 1996.

This production is directed and choreographed by faculty member Paul Finocchiaro, with musical direction by Nick Wayne. The cast includes junior BFA Musical Theatre candidate Callie Syverson of Windom as Maria, summer BFA Acting candidate Dustin Guy Jackson as Capt. Georg Von Trapp and a total cast of 30 that includes several community children as the Von Trapp family.

Tickets for “The Sound of Music” are $22 regular, $19 discounted and $15 for students with a current MavCard. They may be purchased anytime online at MSUTheatre.com or by calling or stopping by the Theatre & Dance Box Office in the lobby of the Earley Center between 4 & 6 p.m., Monday-Friday.
