Oct. 23: Twin Cities Jazz All Stars

Top-call jazz musicians to perform at Minnesota State Mankato.

MANKATO, Minn. -- Doug Snapp and The Twin Cities Jazz All Stars will perform on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. in the Elias J. Halling Recital Hall of the Earley Center for Performing Arts, at 320 Maywood Ave. The concert will include works by Chick Corea, Dave Brubeck, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Chet Baker.

The Twin Cities Jazz All Stars are members of the JazzMN Orchestra in Minneapolis led by Artistic Director Dr. Douglas Snapp, Director of Jazz Studies at Minnesota State, Mankato. The JazzMN Orchestra was formed to enhance the support and appreciation of jazz music and create educational experiences for students.

Dave Karr, tenor saxophonist, has performed with some of the best local and national jazz musicians. Karr composed and arranged music for film, radio, television commercials and various recording projects. He is also the winner of a McKnight Fellowship for Performance Excellence for the year 2007-2008.

Mary Louise Knutson has been called “one of the most exciting and innovative artists to happen to jazz piano in quite some time.” Her debut jazz trio CD, Call Me When You Get There, charted in the Top 50 in the United States and Canada. In 2006, Knutson was a Minnesota Music Awards nominee for both Jazz Artist of the Year and Pianist of the Year.

Joe Pulice holds three degrees in music and percussion from the University of Minnesota. Pulice has won two Minnesota Jazz Music Awards. He was a member of several national touring Big Bands and played in over 40 Broadway productions as a first call drummer in the Twin Cities. He recently recorded two CDs and a DVD of a five-night concert series with tenor saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi.

A Minnesota resident since 1977, bassist Gary Raynor has toured with Sammy Davis Jr., performed with the Count Basie Band, and dozens of Broadway touring shows. Raynor is also a member of Garrison Keillor’s Prairie Home Companion band and can be heard weekly on NPR broadcasts of that syndicated radio show.

Concert admission is $12; $11 for students with a valid MavCARD. Discount tickets are available online for University students. Advance purchase is strongly encouraged.
