Oct. 28-29: Fall Choral Concert
University Chorale will perform contemporary and classical selections.
Minnesota State University, Mankato Music Department News Release, 10-15-2012
MANKATO, Minn. – The University Choral Groups will perform on Sunday, October 28 at 3:00 pm and Monday, October 29, 2012 at 7:30 pm in the Elias J. Halling Recital Hall of the Earley Center for Performing Arts, 320 Maywood Ave.
The University Choral Groups consists of three ensembles; the Concert Choir and Chamber Singers conducted by Dr. David Dickau, and the University Choral conducted by Mr. Rodney Urtel. The Concert Choir is an auditioned group that includes students from all areas of the University. They will be performing some excerpts from an oratorio by Stephen Paulus entitled “To Be Certain of the Dawn” as well as a vocal setting of the William Tell overture. The Chamber Singers will perform two madrigals by one of the greatest madrigal composers, Claudio Monteveredi as well as a very challenging, up-tempo piece entitled “Fiesta” by Venezuelan composer, Cristian Grases.
The University Chorale will perform selections by contemporary composers Emma Lou Diemer and Joseph Martin along with masterworks from Mozart and Handel. The University Chorale is a non-auditioned ensemble and is open to anyone who is interested in performing quality literature.
Sarah Shoff from the Concert Choir and Chamber Singers says, “I enjoy being in these ensembles because of the community. Each group is full of lively people that are morethan just familiar faces, they are family. I am a second alto and take pride in the fact that I can sing that low as a female. Being in these ensembles haschallenged me to be a better musician, and helped to improve my sight-reading skills. Another thing I have learned from Dr. Dickau is to not just “sing the words,” but to sing with purpose.”
Concertadmission is $9; $7 for students with a valid MavCARD. Discount tickets areavailable online for University students. Advance purchase is strongly encouraged. Those who wish to purchase tickets online should go to www.mnsu.edu/music. For more information, call the Performance Series office, (507) 389-5549.
