251 local kindergarten students coming to campus.
Minnesota State University, Mankato Media Relations Office News Release, 11-20-2012
Mankato, Minn. – Minnesota State University, Mankato students in their first semester of professional teacher education classes (“Block One” teacher candidates) will provide reading instruction to 251 local kindergarten students during Literacy Day from 9 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28 in Minnesota State Mankato’s Centennial Student Union Ballroom.
The Minnesota State Mankato student teacher candidates will instruct the local kindergarten students on four lessons and activities that focus on the Skippyjon Jones children’s picture book series by Judith Byron Schachner.
Literacy Day is held as a service to local elementary students, who have limited funds for field trips, and is organized, planned and implemented by the Minnesota State Mankato “Block One” elementary education teacher candidates.
It is intended as an opportunity for Minnesota State Mankato pre-service teachers to connect literacy instruction to those local students.
Minnesota State Mankato’s Literacy Day was piloted during the spring semester of 2012, with 97 kindergarten students from one local elementary school attending the event. This year a Literacy Day will be held in both the fall and spring semesters. Two schools will attend each day, which will allow four elementary schools to participate this year.
The Skippyjon Jones books were chosen to reinforce Minnesota State Mankato’s “big idea” of civility and diversity, the College of Education’s devotion to infusion of cultural proficiency, and the Elementary Education Department’s commitment to produce teacher candidates who are ready to teach within the 21st century global perspective.
