Minnesota State Mankato Department of Theatre & Dance News Release, 1-2-2013

The Minnesota State University, Mankato Department of Theatre & Dance will open the second half of its 2012-13 Mainstage season with the eight-time Tony Award winning musical “Spring Awakening,” Jan. 31-Feb. 10 in the Andreas Theatre of the Earley Center for Performing Arts.

With a book and lyrics by Steven Sater, and music by Duncan Sheik, “Spring Awakening” is based on the 1891 play by Frank Wedekind. It explores the unforgettable journey from youth to adulthood with a power, poignancy and passion. Set in late 19th century German but with a rock and roll beat, the original play was banned in Germany due to its frank portrayal and depictions of adult themes. This production includes mature language and themes.

“Spring Awakening” is directed by Department Chair Paul J. Hustoles with a student core of designers that includes musical director Evan Collins, scene designer Alisa Bowman and choreographer Alexis Heruth. Faculty members David McCarl (costumes) and Steven Smith (lighting) round out the designers.

The cast includes Callie Syverson (junior BFA Musical Theatre Candidate from Windom) as “Wendla” and Jake McInerney (junior BFA Musical Theatre Candidate from Sioux Falls) as “Melchior.” Syverson was featured last summer as “Maria” in “The Sound of Music” and has appeared in “A Chorus Line,” “Phantom of the Opera,” “Rent” and “Chicago,” among others. McInerney was seen as one of the “Altar Boyz,” in “Rent” and as “Vicomte de Chagny” in “Phantom of the Opera,” among others.

Performances of “Spring Awakening” are 7:30 p.m. Jan. 31-Feb. 2 and 6-9, and 2 p.m. Feb. 3, 9 & 10. Tickets are $22 regular, $19 discounted and $15 for current Minnesota State Mankato students. They may be purchased at MSUTheatre.com or beginning Jan. 14 at the Theatre & Dance Box Office in the lobby of the Earley Center for Performing Arts from 4-6 p.m., Monday-Friday, or by calling 507-389-6661.
