Minnesota State University, Mankato Department of Music News Release, 1-8-2013
MANKATO, Minn. -- Internationally acclaimed Cajun artists BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet will perform Saturday, Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m. at Hooligans Neighborhood Pub, 1400 East Madison Ave., Mankato. The event is co-sponsored by KMSU-The Maverick and the Minnesota State Mankato Performance Series with assistance from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
The formation of BeauSoleil, one of the best known and most highly respected Cajun bands in the world, is due to fiddler Michael Doucet's desire to keep the unique Southern Louisiana culture and music from extinction. But while BeauSoleil originated to help preserve his Cajun musical heritage, over the years it has also been known for its innovation. The are continually adding spice from other musical genres including jass and Caribbean. In this way, BeauSoleil keeps the music vital and contemporary.
BeauSoleil has won two Grammy Awards in the Zydeco/Cajun Music Album category as well as garnering ten additional Grammy nominations in that classification. Leader Michael Doucet was awarded the 2007 United States Artists Fellowship and 2005 National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts. The National awards recognize artistic excellence, cultural authenticity and an artist's contribution in the area of U.S. fold and traditional arts. Doucet was named a 2007 USA Collins Family Foundation Fellow and awarded a $50,000 grant by United States Artists, a public charity that supports and promotes the work of American artists.
BeauSoleil is one of the most frequent guests on National Public Radio's legendary program, A Prairie Home Companion. BeauSoleil performed during the halftime show at Super Bowl XXX in New Orleans.
