Maverick Flight Team Finishes 10th in Nation

Finish was team's best ever at the national competition.

Mankato, Minn. – Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Maverick Flight team (pictured at right) placed 10th nationally in team competition at the National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA) Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference (SAFECON) in Columbus, Ohio, from May 6-11.

The 10th-place finish was the Maverick Flight Team’s first-ever national top 10 finish. Minnesota State Mankato finished 23rd nationally in 2012.

The team also received the Sportsmanship Award and College Aviation Progress Award at the competition, and individual team members earned places in various competition categories.

The national competition featured more than 300 students from 30 colleges and universities representing 11 regions.

Individual members of the Maverick Flight Team participating at nationals included advisors Scott Eisel and Carrie Giles, captain Austin Jacobsen and competitors Aaron J. Barthol, Lane S. Dulon, Gretchen F. Eichstadt, Mitchell Elliott, Trent A. Fridono, Patrick I. Kooima, Ethan J. Lofthus and Nick A. Singletary.

The Maverick Flight Team was invited to compete at the national competition after placing second at Region V competition in Mankato on Oct. 10-12.

The Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference provides a foundation to promote and foster communications and cooperation between aviation students, educators, and the aviation industry. The national competition develops and advances aviation education through a strong emphasis on aviation safety.
