Mark Halverson MN Blues Hall of Fame Nominee

The host of Blues Before Monday (and other Blues shows on KMSU) has been nominated to the Minnesota Blues Hall of Fame. You can vote for him until June 30th.

2013-06-17

Mark Halverson, host of Blues Before Monday (among other Blues shows) has been nominated to the Minnesota Blues 2013 Hall of Fame for the category “Supportive of the Blues (Non-Performer).” The Minnesota Blues Hall of Fame, started by the Greater Twin Cities Blues Music Society in 2006, intends to honor authors, composers, musicians and individuals who have had an impact and contribution to the Blues music scene in Minnesota.

This is what the official nomination reads:

Mark Halverson has hosted KMSU Radio’s “Blues Before Monday” in Mankato since the show’s inception in 1991 has now entered his 20th year of hosting the show.

Equipped with liberal ethos, a wry wit and mastery of Blues vernacular, Mark Halverson produces nearly 7 hours of Blues programming each week on a volunteer basis, including his shows: “Blues Break,” “Blues Before Monday” and “Blue Monday.”

Mark is a true Blues aficionado; he has an incredible Blues tenacity and passion with probably the largest collection of Blues festival t-shirts in the Midwest. He just really enjoys being a part of the Blues community. Like many of his peers, he fell prey to the music’s hypnotic lure after encountering the Blues via the burgeoning 60s psychedelic rock ‘n’ roll scene listening to the Stones, Beatles, Hendrix and Muddy Waters, who opened him up to the heartfelt, soulful nature of the Blues. There were no Blues shows on FM at the time. You had to catch a skipping signal on AM late at night from somewhere in Arkansas.

Halverson cites that he doesn’t have much musical talent despite possessing a vast collection of guitars, bass and Hammond B3 organs that remain largely ignored due to his jockeying activities and the pesky day job as an attorney. He’ll keep on doing the show as long as there is a forum because, bottom line, he loves the music!
