Lino Lakes, Minn., resident Stephanie Peterson receives prestigious scholarship.
Minnesota State University, Mankato Media Relations Office News Release, 8-2-2013
Mankato, Minn. – Stephanie Peterson of Lino Lakes, Minn., a 2013 graduate of Centennial High School, has been selected as the 2013 Meredith Scholar at Minnesota State University, Mankato. The scholarship award amount is $8,000 per year each academic year for four years and will pay Peterson’s tuition, fees and some of her day-to-day college expenses.
Peteson’s selection for the prestigious award was announced by Brian Martensen, interim dean of Minnesota State Mankato’s College of Science, Engineering & Technology.
Peterson, daughter of Ronald and Deborah Peterson, is the 17th Meredith Scholar since the program’s inception.
The Meredith Scholars program was created in 1995 by Dr. Donald Meredith of Mankato, co-founder of Mankato’s Orthopaedic & Fracture Clinic PA, and his wife Marjorie.
All Meredith Scholars get full, four-year scholarships and support for daily living expenses. The scholarship is awarded annually to an exceptional Minnesota State Mankato first-year student who has demonstrated the potential and commitment to pursue a major in mathematics or the natural sciences. This includes majors in mathematics, mathematics education, biological sciences, life science, physics, chemistry, astronomy or physical science. Candidates must demonstrate outstanding academic achievement in high school (upper 10 percent of his or her class), and have an ACT college preparatory examination composite score of 27 or greater to be considered.
Meredith Scholars receive significant financial support so they don’t need to get a job while in college, allowing them to spend their energy and time studying, learning and fully engaging in the Minnesota State Mankato learning community.
Natural science and mathematics is the program’s focus because the Merediths want to improve U.S. math and science student achievement in comparison with other countries.
Dr. Meredith, a retired orthopaedic surgeon, was raised in rural North Dakota and has spent all of his professional life serving the people of south central Minnesota. His interest in helping the youth of the region, and his gratitude for his own public education, prompted him to establish the scholarship at Minnesota State Mankato.
