Sept. 16-Oct. 2: Alumnus Gary Freeburg’s Photography
Artist’s Alaskan landscape photography on display in Conkling Gallery.

Mankato, Minn. – Minnesota State University, Mankato alumnus and landscape photographer Gary Freeburg is exhibiting his recent photographic work on campus from Monday, Sept. 16 through Wednesday, Oct. 2 at the university’s Conkling Gallery.
Freeburg’s exhibit, free and open to the public, is titled “The Valley of 10,000 Smokes: Revisiting the Alaskan Sublime.” Freeburg’s work will be on display at 139 Nelson Hall, the Conkling Gallery, during gallery hours (9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday). Baker’s book of the same title is for sale in the Barnes & Noble Bookstore in Centennial Student Union.
Freeburg will deliver an artist lecture from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 30 in Centennial Student Union’s Ostrander Auditorium. The lecture will be followed by a reception in Conkling Gallery. Freeburg is also doing a Studio Residency from Sept. 30 to Oct. 1 in the Nelson Hall Studios.
Freeburg’s current work calls attention to earth’s regenerative process through observation, study, and photographic documentation of Alaska’s tidal and volcanic regions. He has been the recipient of many awards and has worked with renowned photographers and educators Oliver Gagliani, Ansel Adams and John Schultz.
Freeburg lived and worked for 25 years in Alaska, where he served as a professor of art at the University of Alaska, Kenai Peninsula College, directing the art program and serving as curator in the campus art gallery that now bears his name.
Freeburg is currently a professor and the director of the Sawhill Gallery, School of Art, Design and Art History at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va. He received two academic degrees from Minnesota State Mankato, a bachelor of fine arts degree in 1974, and a master’s degree in 1977. He also received a master of fine arts degree from the University of Iowa in 1978.
