Live Stream Available for March 1 Evening Performance of ‘As You Like It’
Will be first time a Minnesota State Mankato theatre production has been rebroadcast, either live or recorded.
Minnesota State University, Mankato Media Relations Office News Release, 2-14-2014
Mankato, Minn. – The Minnesota State University, Mankato Department of Theatre & Dance’s 7:30 p.m. performance of Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” on Saturday, March 1 will be streamed live at http://link.mnsu.edu/mavtubelive, marking the first time a Minnesota State Mankato theatre production has been broadcast, either live or recorded.
The event will be produced with multiple camera angles at the rear and on the sides of the theatre with high-definition cameras, so those who have HD download capabilities will be able to watch the production in high definition. Plugging into the live sound feed will enhance the microphones that are planned to be placed at either side of the proscenium of the theatre. Technicians plan to attend various rehearsals and live performances so the production can be “live mixed,” meaning switching from one camera angle to another on the spot.
The live stream of a theatre production is unique, because nearly all theatre productions are strictly limited by rights agreements. These agreements dictate how much is paid by the department to a rights holder to present a show, how many times it can be presented within a contracted time period, and includes an estimate of how many people will see the show.
The Department of Theatre & Dance often does productions such as William Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” that are in “public domain.” This allows the department to open it up to live streaming and utilizing the recorded version of the production in the future, either in classroom activities or other opportunities.
The March 1 live stream of “As You Like It” will be produced by Maverick Visual Productions, a unit of Minnesota State Mankato’s Information and Technology Services, in partnership with the university’s Department of Theatre and Dance.
The production will be archived here.
