Dr. Glenn A. Gaesser Lecture – Big Fat Lies: The Truth about Your Weight and Your Health
Dr. Glenn A. Gaesser, Professor and Director of the Healthy Lifestyles Research Center at Arizona State University, delivered an eye-opening lecture on the misconceptions associated with Obesity Epidemic to a packed auditorium on the evening October 22, 2013 in the Centennial Student Union.
People who are overweight or obese are urged by healthcare providers and celebrity medical professionals like Dr. Oz to “go on a diet!” Professor Glenn Gaesser’s book, Big Fat Lies, published originally in 1991, paints a clear picture of how dieting actually jeopardizes one’s health. Gaesser provides a definitive overview of both the epidemiological and direct biological evidence contradicting the health benefits of dieting. Indeed, dieting can lead to a variety of metabolic ailments associated with premature death. Gaesser advocates for lifestyle alterations associated changing how a person eats and focuses on the benefits of increasing one’s physical activity. His lecture reviewed the plethora of studies supporting how lifestyle modifications reverse risk factors associated diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. Professor Gaesser’s visit to Mankato was coordinated by the Exercise is Medicine Club, advised by Dr. Cherie Pettitt, Asst Prof of Exercise Science/Exercise Physiology. Support for his lecture was provided by Minnesota State Mankato Student Affairs, Mayo Clinic Health Systems, and the College of Allied Health & Nursing.
