March 25: University Orchestra
Performance to take place in Halling Recital Hall.
Minnesota State University, Mankato Department of Music News Release, 3-3-2014
Mankato, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University, Mankato University Orchestra will perform on Tuesday, March 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the Elias J. Halling Recital Hall of the Earley Center for Performing Arts, 320 Maywood Ave.
The University Orchestra is an ensemble consisting of both music and non-music majors alike. The ensemble is under the direction of Joseph Rodgers and performs music by many composers written for orchestra and chamber ensembles.
The Orchestra will be performing Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 1, written in 1824 when Mendelssohn was only 15 years old. The work was premièred at a private gathering on Nov. 14, 1824 to honor his sister Fanny Mendelssohn’s 19th birthday. The composition is a four-movement symphony that is about 30 minutes in length.
Rodgers said that it “tests the concentration and stretches the abilities of the orchestra performers.” Rodgers added, “ … playing this symphony is a unique opportunity for the University orchestra and a great challenge that allows the performers to grow their musical abilities.”
Other compositions on the program include Three Pieces for Orchestra by Dubois and Faure’s Pavane.
Concert admission is $9; $7 for students with a valid MavCard. Discount tickets are available online for University students. Advance purchase is strongly encouraged.
