May 2-3: 'Carmina Burana'
Departments of Theatre & Dance and Music to collaborate on two shows.
Minnesota State University, Mankato Department of Theatre & Dance News Release, 4-15-2014
Mankato, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University, Mankato Department of Theatre & Dance and Department of Music will collaborate on a production of “Carmina Burana” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 2, and 2 p.m. Saturday, May 3, in the Ted Paul Theatre of the Earley Center for Performing Arts. One hour before each performance, there will be an informational presentation by those involved with the show in the Halling Recital Hall of the Earley Center.
A large, extraordinary collection of medieval poetry came to light in 1803 at the southern Bavarian monastery of Benediktbeuern. This collection of 320 poems, known as “Carmina Burana” or “Songs of Benediktbeuern,”dates back to about AD 1230. The “Carmina Burana” collection owes its present popularity to the German composer Carl Orff (1895-1982), who wrote his famous opus of the same name in 1935-36 using 24 of the original texts.
The production will bring together several performance groups from Minnesota State Mankato and the Mankato community: nearly 40 dancers from the Department of Theatre & Dance under the direction of Julie Kerr-Berry and Daniel Stark, the Minnesota State Mankato Concert Wind Ensemble under the direction of Amy K. Roisum Foley, the Minnesota State Mankato Concert Choir under the direction of David Dickau, and the Minnesota Valley Chorale under the direction of Eric Harstad.
Tickets are $12 regular, $10 discounted (over 65, under 16 or groups of 15 or more) and $9 for current Minnesota State Mankato students with a MavCard. They may be purchased online at MSUTheatre.com or by calling or stopping by the Theatre & Dance Box Office in the lobby of the Earley Center for Performing Arts from 4-6 p.m., Monday-Friday.
