MANKATO, Minn. – Student Activities invites MSU Alum and Ribfest Competitor at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

“We’re not fat. We’re big boned.”  That’s the tagline for Minnesota State Mankato alum and nationally-traveled barbeque competitor Pat Nelson’s team.  Nelson and his crew are very excited to return to Mankato for the city’s Ribfest August 6-9 at Riverfront Park.

Before the official event kicks off, MSU faculty, staff, students, and visitors will be able to get a sneak preview of some of Nelson’s barbeque on campus.  He’ll appear on Thursday, August 4 at 11:00 a.m. for a free demonstration featuring barbeque pointers and, of course, some mouth-watering samples. The demonstration, weather permitting, will take place on the Centennial Student Union Mall.

John Bulcock, Assistant Director of Student Activities and the coordinator for the event, said “This marks the fifth year Pat has joined us on campus.  We’re glad to have a fellow Maverick make a return to campus for such a great event!” “ You may even see a few Minnesota Vikings enjoying samples in-between practices.” said Bulcock.

Nelson’s team is an award winning one, having garnered several “Best Ribs,” “Best Sauce” and “Best Pork” titles at various competitions throughout the country.  His pulled pork pulled top honors at Mankato’s 2014 Ribfest and People’s Choice in 2015  He hopes to take home more awards at this year’s event.

The event is sponsored by the Student Activities Office and is free and open to the public.
