Spicer’s Cindy Firkins Smith Receives Distinguished Alumni Award
Award presented at April 25 ceremony.

Mankato, Minn. – Cindy Firkins Smith, who now resides in Spicer, Minn., and is a native of Emmetsburg, Iowa, received the 2014 Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award from Minnesota State University, Mankato last week.
Firkins Smith (pictured), who has a dermatology practice in Willmar, Minn., is one of eight 2014 alumni award winners. She was honored at an April 25 ceremony hosted by the Minnesota State Mankato Alumni Association.
Alumni Achievement Awards go to graduates who have achieved high rank or honor in their professions and have had a major impact on their communities.
Firkins Smith says her parents always encouraged her to dream big. She graduated magna cum laude from Minnesota State Mankato with a dual degree in biology and psychology in 1981. After graduation, Firkins Smith went on to medical school and completed her residency in dermatology at the University of Minnesota, where she now works part time as an adjunct professor.
As a dermatologist and surgeon, Firkins Smith now seeks to help spread the word about the danger of tanning booths. She has been active in advancing legislation regarding the issue and is always proactive with her patients.
Firkins Smith is also the current president of the Minnesota Medical Association. In that role, she strives to bring medical professionals together, encouraging them to put patients first in the battle with health care issues.
Firkins Smith has also given more than 100 educational presentations and is a published author.
