Patrick Sexton Receives Distinguished Alumni Award

Mankato, Minn. – Patrick Sexton of Mankato, Minn., who grew up in Byron, Minn., received the 2014 Distinguished Alumni Fitterer Service Award from Minnesota State University, Mankato last week.

Sexton (pictured), the director of the athletic training program at Minnesota State Mankato, is one of eight 2014 alumni award winners. He was honored at an April 25 ceremony hosted by the Minnesota State Mankato Alumni Association.

Fitterer Service Awards go to graduates who have given distinguished service to Minnesota State Mankato and have used their time, treasure and talents to preserve and promote university programs.

Sexton graduated from Minnesota State Mankato in 1985 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and athletic training. Following graduation, Sexton earned a master’s degree in athletic training and exercise science from the University of Arizona.

In 1993, after spending two years at the University of Wyoming and five years at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, Sexton returned to Minnesota State Mankato as head certified athletic trainer and assistant professor in Athletic Training. In 1997, he began work at the University of Minnesota on his doctorate in educational policy and administration, which he completed in 2001.

In his current position at Minnesota State Mankato, Sexton teaches courses that focus on the prevention, care and assessment of athletic injuries, treatment and rehabilitation/reconditioning, pathology and pharmacology and much more.

Sexton has received numerous awards for his contributions to improving the field of athletic training and athletic training education. In 2010, he received the National Athletic Trainers’ Association’s Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award. On April 12, Sexton was inducted into the Minnesota Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame.
