Minnesota State sophomore Makenzie Petzel was recently awarded a Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grant. Makenzie is taking part in a study abroad program through COSI-Maximo Nivel in San Jose, Costa Rica.

Petzel, a student in the Honors Program and a Social Work major with a minor in Spanish, spent four weeks in San Jose. Petzel took courses focused on Latin American culture and pursued research surrounding the high dropout rates of students in Costa Rica.

“I intend to work in the public school system as a social worker after graduation, and the obstacles students in Costa Rica face that prompt them to drop out of school are similar to situations I may have to face as a social worker while implementing strategies with students and their families to promote academic success for the student. This project is also giving me the chance to evaluate policies and procedures of school systems in Costa Rica, practice for future evaluations in my career,” said Petzel.

Petzel utilized resources in the Office of University Fellowships, the Honors Program, and the Social Work and Spanish Departments in her pursuit of this award.
