Peace Crane Project and Photography Speaker at BEC Historical Society

Join the Community Engagement Office and the Blue Earth County Historical Society as we make peace cranes and hear James Bowey speak about his photo exhibit, "When Home Won't Let You Stay"

The Community Engagement Office and Memorial Library at MSU, Mankato will host a 1000 Peace Crane Project, a community-engaged art project, at the Blue Earth County Historical Society. The project will be held in conjunction with “When Home Won’t Let You Stay”, a traveling photography exhibition by documentary photographer James A. Bowey.

The photographer, James A. Bowey, will speak on Wednesday, June 29, from noon – 1 pm at the BECHS about his display. The Peace Crane Project will take place immediately before and after his presentation, from 11:30 am – 12 noon and 1-1:30 pm in a room adjacent to his presentation. In addition to small peace cranes, one larger peace crane will be made.

Student Activities Assistant Director of Community Engagement, Karen Anderson, says, “As a theme, ‘When Home Won’t Let You Stay’ rings true for the photo exhibit and the 1000 Peace Crane Project. Community engaged art provides the opportunity for campus and community to create art together, drawing people together to get to know each other. From a larger perspective, making peace cranes is the opportunity get to know each other and engage in building community.”

The Peace Crane Project is a community engaged art project, accomplished in conjunction with the Common Read program. Participants will create a total of 1000 peace cranes at various locations around the University and Mankato until late September. The peace cranes will be used by a class to create an art installation in conjunction with a speaker for the Common Read program.
