Mankato, Minn. – Artist Carolyn Swiszcz will display her paintings from Jan. 9-30 at Minnesota State University, Mankato as the next featured artist in the University’s Art Enrichment and Andreas Endowment Residency and Lecture Series.
Swiszcz will present an artist’s lecture that is free and open to the public at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23 in Centennial Student Union’s Ostrander Auditorium. The artist’s lecture will be followed by an 8 p.m. reception in the Conkling Gallery (located in Nelson Hall 139), where Swiszcz’s “Research Room” exhibit will be on display from Jan. 9 through Jan. 30.
Swiszcz will also be artist-in-residence from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 23-24 in the Nelson Hall Art Studios on campus.
A Minnesota State Mankato Department of Art preview of the upcoming exhibit said that Swiszcz’s paintings rely heavily on rudimentary printmaking processes, most of which she achieves without the use of a press; many of the patterns and textures in her work are created with trace monotype, stencils and rubber stamps.
According to a bio from her website, Swiszcz was born and raised in New Bedford, Mass., and moved to Minnesota to attend the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, where she earned a bachelor of fine arts degree in 1994.
She later spent three winters in Miami Beach on a fellowship from the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts. Time spent among Miami Beach’s faded apartment buildings inspired Swiszcz to take an interest in buildings and public spaces.
Swiszcz’s work has been exhibited at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, The Drawing Center, Highpoint Center for Printmaking, Miyako Yoshinaga Gallery in New York, Steven Zevitas Gallery in Boston, and The Corcoran Gallery of Art. She is a recipient of the Jerome, McKnight, and Bush artist fellowships.
