Dr. Kuldeep Agarwal Chosen to Present 2018 Douglas R. Moore Lecture
Dr. Kuldeep Agarwal was chosen to present his research on innovations in 3D printing in the field of medicine
Each year a faculty member is chosen to present their research at the Douglas R. Moore Lecture, which will be celebrating its 44th year in April 2018. Its puprose is to celebrate cutting edge research and honor a faculty member engaged in an acitivity demonstrating excellence in discovery and presented to enrich the intellectual life of the Unversity.
Dr. Kuldeep Agawal, a professor in the Automotive and Manufacturing Engineering and Technology Department in the College of Science, Engineering and Technology, was recently chosen to present his research at the 2018 lecture next April.
Using Additive Manufacturing (also known as 3D printing), Agarwal's research aims to find an alternative approach to develop materials for medical implants (knees, hips, etc.) that will improve their effectiveness and longevity.
Currently approximately 500,000 knee and 300,00 hip implants are performed in the US each year and are estimated to increase 8.3 percent annually through 2025. These implants often fail prematurely due to fracture, corrosion, tissue reaction, and wear.
Dr. Agarwal's approach is to develop materials that will combine the mechanical performance of metals, such as cobalt chrome, with the biocompatability of calcium phosphates. His research aims to create a novel biomaterial using a binder jet additive manufacturing process and test it in live studies.
We are honored to have Dr. Agarwal chosen for this lectureship and look forward to hearing about his research next April.
