MANKATO – The entirety of the 2017-18 Minnesota State University, Mankato Theatre & Dance season is quite political in nature. But the upcoming production of “The Aeneid,” a play never before done in the United States, is particularly timely.

In the age of what some may view as “unwelcome” signs on America’s doorsteps, “The Aeneid,” set in the present time, deals with refugees who cannot find a home. Based on Virgil’s epic Latin poem, written between 29 and 19 BC, the themes still are relevant today. The play tells a heroic story of survival that follows a band of refugees who flee their devastated city to embark on the perilous quest for a new country.

“The Aeneid” runs 7:30 p.m. Oct. 12-14 and 18-21; and 2 p.m. Oct. 15, 21 and 22 in the Andreas Theatre. Tickets are $16 regular; and $14 for seniors ages 65 and older, children under 16 and groups of 15 or more.

The production is the second Mainstage show in the special Sesquicentennial Season, celebrating the 150th birthday of Minnesota State Mankato (1868-2018). Each production chosen represents a 25-year segment of the University’s history.
