Speech & Debate Team Competes at February Tournaments

Team competed at tournaments in St. Cloud, Minn., River Falls, Wis., and Marshall, Minn.

Minnesota State University, Mankato's speech and debate team competed in three February tournament.

The month began with the team competing Feb. 1-2 in St. Cloud, Minn., at the Icebox Classic invitational tournament hosted by St. Cloud State University. The Mavericks won the team sweepstakes championship in that tournament. Individual results included:

Informative : Emily Duley (2nd)
Prose : Jacqueline Tomas (6th)
Persuasion : Jacqueline Tomas (3rd)
Program Oral Interp : Kaylee Matuszak (4th), Emma Roggeman (3rd)
Duo : Maggie Falkowski & Emma Roggeman (3rd, qualifies for NFA); Kaylee Matuszak & Jacqueline Tomas (Tournament Champions)
Poetry : Maggie Falkowski (3rd)
After-Dinner Speaking : Kaylee Matuszak (Champion, qualifies for NFA)
Drama : Elizabeth Neagle (6th, qualifies for NFA); Jacqueline Tomas (4th, qualifies for NFA; Emily Duley (3rd); Kaylee Matuszak (2nd, qualifies for AFA)
Communication Analysis : Maggie Falkowski (2nd, qualifies for NFA)
Individual Sweepstakes : Jacqueline Tomas (3rd), Kaylee Matuszak (Champion)

Next on the schedule were the Wisconsin Lovefest swing tournaments hosted by UW-Eau Claire and the UW-Eau Claire alumni Feb. 9-10 in Eau Claire, Wis. The tournaments drew teams from across the country and stacked the Mavericks against nationally ranked programs. Individual results included:

Day 1: Grace Walsh Individual Events Tournament (UW-Eau Claire)
After Dinner Speaking: Kaylee Matuszak (5th)
Duo Interpretation: Emily Duley & Kylee Johnson (6th)
Informative: Kassidy Tocco (3rd, qualifies for AFA)
Persuasion: Kassidy Tocco (4th)
Prose: Emily Duley (6th, qualifies for NFA)
Individual Sweepstakes: Kassidy Tocco (5th)

Day 2: We Love Forensics Alumni Tournament (UW-Eau Claire Alumni)
After Dinner Speaking: Kaylee Matuszak (3rd)
Drama: Emily Duley (4th)
Impromptu: Kylee Johnson (7th, qualifies for NFA)
Prose: Emily Duley (5th)

On Feb. 16-17, the speech & debate team traveled to Marshall, Minn., to compete in the Minnesota Collegiate Forensic Association State Tournament, hosted by Southwest Minnesota State University.

Overall, Minnesota State Mankato placed third in overall team sweepstakes at the MCFA state tournament. Individual results included:

Prose Interpretation: Samantha Scholl (6th), Maggie Falkowski (4th)
Program Oral Interp: Emma Roggeman (6th), Kylee Johnson (5th), Kaylee Matuszak (4th)
Duo Interpretation: Kylee Johnson & Kaylene Kruse (5th), Emma Roggeman & Maggie Falkowski (4th), Kaylee Matuszak & Jacqueline Tomas (3rd)
Poetry Interpretation: Kylee Johnson (5th), Kassidy Tocco (2nd)
After-Dinner Speaking: Kassidy Tocco (6th), Kylee Johnson (5th, qualifies for NFA)
Dramatic Interpretation: Kaylene Kruse (5th)

Additionally, the top two speakers in Oratory (Persuasive Speaking) at the MCFA state
tournament qualify for entry in the prestigious Interstate Oratorical Contest. IOC is the
oldest public speaking competition in the United States, celebrating excellence in Oratory
since 1874.

This year, Minnesota State Mankato will send one team member representative to IOC: sophomore Kassidy Tocco, who placed 2nd in Oratory at the MCFA state tournament.

Next up for the Mavericks is national competition in April.
