Darrol Bussler, who helped found the Kaposia Days festival, celebrated his last as a South St. Paul resident this weekend.
Bussler, 65, is selling his house and moving to Waconia. He teaches at Minnesota State University in Mankato.
Bussler arrived in South St. Paul in 1971 as the small town was sliding into an economic depression with the shrinking of the meatpacking industry. He couldn't do much about that, but he did help lift people out of their civic depression.
Events and programs Bussler started or helped to start are still going strong three decades later, including Christmas in South St. Paul, an annual concert at Luther Memorial Church; a restorative justice program, which tries to get perpetrators to make amends with their victims; a civic leadership program; and the cleanup of South St. Paul's once-grimy riverfront for recreational uses.
