MSU storm chasers were following funnel clouds again June 29, and they captured spectacular photos and video of a tornado on the ground near Madelia, Minn.
The storm chasers -- meteorology students from MSU's Weather Analysis Laboratory for Teaching and Educational Resources (WALTER) — successfully intercepted a weak (F-0-F1), but very tall vortex near the intersection of Highways 3 and 15.
The storm-chasing team, led by WALTER Weather Lab director and lead storm chaser Joshua Jans, relied on intense forecasting and cutting-edge field technology to follow and witness the entire life cycle of the twister and parent supercell. The cell remained tornadic from near Windom to north of St. Peter.
In addition to still photos, the team captured video of the twister that can be viewed at http://www.mnsu.edu/weather/StormChase/tallvortex.mov&
