Minnesota Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor is donating up to $500,000 to help college students displaced by Hurricane Katrina attend Minnesota State University, Mankato or South Central College, a technical and community college.
The donation would cover expenses for about 100 students at both schools this school year. Students are eligible if they were enrolled at campuses in Louisiana, Mississippi or Alabama that were affected by the hurricane.
So far, about 10 students whose schooling was disrupted have enrolled at Mankato, according to a spokesperson for the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) system.
Last week, MnSCU officials announced that the system had room for at least 300 displaced students. The system's Board of Trustees will consider a proposal next week to grant in-state tuition rates to students affected by the storm.
More information for displaced students is available at www.katrinarelief.mnscu.edu.
