Book contest for young authors planned Oct. 22-Dec. 2

A contest for young authors, “The Sound of Reading,” will be conducted Oct. 22 through Dec. 2 in Mankato by the Student Leadership Development & Service-Learning office.

A contest for young authors, "The Sound of Reading," will be conducted Oct. 22 through Dec. 2 in Mankato by Minnesota State Mankato's Student Leadership Development & Service-Learning office.

The event is intended to encourage a love of reading, writing and artistic expression among local kindergarten through third-graders.

On "Make a Difference Day" Saturday, Oct. 22, Minnesota State students will be available in front of B Dalton Bookstore at River Hills Mall to help children create their books.

Deadline for submitting books (including illustrations) is Nov. 4 - National Family Literacy Day.The books will be displayed in the River Hills Mall ­Target Wing during National Children's Book Week Nov. 14-19. A ceremony honoring the winners will be Dec. 2.

Student Leadership Development & Service-Learning has a rich history ofpromoting literacy in Mankato. Its other projects and initiatives include the Jumpstart National Literacy Program, the annual children's book drive, children's literacy carnival, and special projects such as assembling literacy care packages for Hurricane Katrina victims.
