Minnesota State Mankato will add a full-time sexual violence education coordinator to raise student awareness about the causes and consequences of violence, President Richard Davenport announced today.
Davenport said the position will be permanent and full-time, with a $15,000 annual operating budget for awareness campaigns and other programs. In addition, the coordinator will be assigned a full-time (20 hours per week) graduate assistant.
Since last year the University has had a half-time position with a $10,000 operating budget.
"We have raised student and community awareness over the last year, but we need to do more," Davenport said. "A full-time position and a 50 percent budget increase will provide the resources for us to better explain how sexual violence impacts the entire community, and how everyone can help to prevent it."
The full-time coordinator will design and implement sexual violence education for students, faculty, staff and community members; will coordinate education and campus-wide training about sexual assault prevention; will consult with student victims of sexual violence; and will recommend and implement programs to create a safe campus environment for students.
The University's goal is to have the position filled by the end of June, so orientation programs can be developed and presented to new students who arrive in August.
Pat Swatfager-Haney, vice president for Student Affairs at Minnesota State Mankato, says a full-time coordinator will significantly increase campus awareness and education about sexual violence.
"Funding this position on a full-time basis will provide for a better educational environment for all students, faculty and staff on campus," Swatfager-Haney said.
"This demonstrates that our institution is doing all that it can to ensure that students have access to prevention education and support services," added Deirdre Rosenfeld, director of the Women's Center at the University.
