Five Minnesota State University, Mankato faculty and staff members have been accepted into the 2006-2007 Minnesota State Colleges & Universities System Luoma Leadership Academy.

The MnSCU Luoma Leadership Academy is an 18-month program that teaches leadership theories, practices and skills to faculty and staff who aspire to higher leadership positions. The academy helps participants develop leadership skills, gain an appreciation of different perspectives in the system and create a network of colleagues committed to transformational leadership.

Minnesota State Mankato faculty and staff who have been accepted into the 2006-2007 program are: Deborah Anderson, Human Resources Management Information manager; Kevin Buisman, athletic director; Mary Hadley, Chemistry & Geology faculty member; Randall McClure, English faculty member and composition director; and Maureen Prenn, coordinator of professional education.

"These employees have already demonstrated leadership qualities, and the Luoma Leadership Academy will sharpen their skills and expand their knowledge," said President Richard Davenport. "I congratulate each of them, and I look forward to the improved teaching and learning opportunities that their Academy participation will bring to Minnesota State Mankato."

The Luoma Leadership Academy program includes two leadership sessions over one year (an initial five-day session, followed a year later by a concluding five-day session). Between sessions, participants gain practical experience with guidance from college mentors and Academy coaches.

The leadership development program is named in honor of Jim Luoma, a trustee emeritus of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system board. Luoma served as a trustee from 1999 to 2004. He served as board chair and vice chair, and as chair of the Educational Policy Committee, and he consistently supported professional and educational development for faculty and staff.

MnSCU's Office of the Chancellor contracts with The Chair Academy in Mesa, Ariz., to deliver the program. Facilitators are current and former academic leaders in higher education.

The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system comprises 32 state universities, community colleges, technical colleges and combined community and technical colleges located on 53 campuses across the state. The system serves approximately 240,000 students annually in credit-based courses and another 130,000 in non-credit courses.
