A transitional program for underrepresented students at Minnesota State University, Mankato has been awarded $100,000 in funding by the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System.

The funding was announced last month by Linda Baer, the system's senior vice chancellor for academic and student affairs.

Minnesota State Mankato's College Access Program prepares high school students of color to move from secondary to post-secondary education. The funds will be used to improve the program's peer tutoring initiative, its pre-college summer institutes and its after-school high school outreach programs.

The program strives to increase the number of students of color who attend college, and to improve retention and graduation rates. The program, administered by the Office of Institutional Diversity, aims to increase the number of students of color by 25 percent each year for the next three years.

Baer praised the program in a letter to Michael Fagin, Minnesota State Mankato's dean of Institutional Diversity.

"Improving outreach efforts to underrepresented students and improving their retention and graduation rates from the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities are among the primary objectives of our Board of Trustees," Baer said.

The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, of which Minnesota State Mankato is a member, comprises 32 state universities and community and technical colleges serving Minnesota's higher education needs. The system serves 240,000 students per year in credit-based courses, and an additional 130,000 students in non-credit courses.
