Trailblazers in the fields of disability rights, diversity awareness and racial harmony — Pathfinders in their respective fields — gathered Monday night with 250 others to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy.

Children’s art illustrating King’s philosophical tenets adorned the placemats as the Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Board gave away its 23rd annual Pathfinder Awards at the Kato Entertainment Center.

Steve Oachs, who tests technology to help disabled people live independently, basked in an extended standing ovation before a Mankato Clinic official accepted an award for his company’s diversity seminar.

A Somali-born woman, Shayzell Jones, won a $200 Minnesota State University scholarship for an essay about acceptance and social justice efforts at the school.

Michael Fagin, dean for Institutional Diversity at MSU, quoted a segment: “I feel welcome at this institution and equal to all people and all backgrounds.”
