Minnesota State Mankato's renovated game room area in the Centennial Student Union has been selected for the Association of College Unions International Renovation and Construction Showcase.
The room, which hosts academic classes and serves as home to the Mavericks bowling team, underwent a $1 million renovation led by Paulsen Architects of Mankato. Photos and a project profile were published in ASUI's February 2007 issue of The Bulletin.
The annual showcase highlights the best in renewed student union spaces and presents union professionals with various approaches, plans and features to consider when faced with renovating challenges.
In early 2006 University officials decided that the existing game room needed to be renovated due to water intrusion, ventilation problems, inadequate ADA accessibility to the bowling lanes and an outdated image. The Union Board and Student Association worked with the university staff and Paulsen Architects in planning for the upgraded, progressive space that was funded with student fees. The new, 18,877-square-foot area includes a video gaming area, billiards, bowling lanes, vending area and television lounge.
This is the fourth national recognition for the renovated Centennial Student Union and its spaces designed by Paulsen Architects. In 2006, CSU was awarded a Gold Citation from American School & University magazine and was featured in their August 2006 Educational Interior Showcase. The union also received a 2006 FAB Award from the Northland Chapter of the International Interior Design Association. These two awards were preceded by the 2006 Facility Design Award of Excellence from ACUI.
