Letter to the editor of The Free Press, Mankato, MN, from President Richard Davenport [published 4/20/2007]

TO THE EDITOR:

Minnesota State University recently held an important referendum in which students voted on two options that would have provided much-needed improvements in outdoor recreation, athletic and fitness facilities. The initiative generated a record student turnout, and a significant number — 44 percent — voted in favor of a fee increase to fund over $9.5 million of the renovations.

The results certainly don’t indicate overwhelming student opposition to renovated outdoor facilities. Instead, the level of participation signals an active, engaged student body. It also suggests a broad base of support, which means we should continue the consultation process to further refine the proposal and funding plans.

Getting support was difficult in the current fiscal environment. Students have experienced several years of increasing tuition and fees. Nonetheless, the results are encouraging: If fewer than 200 students had changed their opinions, the outcome would have been much different.

The president has the authority to implement a student fee, but I will respect the student vote. Because research shows that a sound body and a sound mind go hand in hand, and because health and wellness is an important priority in my university strategic plan, I intend to continue discussions about the proposal with the students.

The learning experience is the soul of a university. We will continue to invest state and private money into new academic facilities. We will use the feedback from this referendum to evaluate options for safer, higher-quality outdoor facilities that will allow our students to pursue an active, healthy lifestyle.

Richard Davenport

President, Minnesota State University, Mankato
